Tamarack's very first album released in 1980. ( We put out a '45 single the year before that!)- The band when formed in '78 was called Sutherland, Gordon, and Bird. ( Randy Sutherland, James Gordon, Jeff Bird)- when we recorded this album ( On vinyl only)- Our management company urged us to change the name of the band for better marketing. The first pressing of the album was credited to "Sutherland Gordon And Bird" and the NAME of the album was "Tamarack" after a fiddle Tune Jeff created by mashing two traditional tunes together. The NEXT pressing, ( It sold well back in the golden era before downloading)- we called it TAMARACK as the band name , and "Music Of Canada" as the non-so-imaginative title. We were strictly a traditional band then.. Our 'schtick' was arranging old traditional songs in a way that might resonate with modern listeners. It took two more albums till we started to write originals, still exploring the Canadian historical context though.

Produced by the band, recorded at the legendary Grant Avenue Studios in Hamilton by Greg Roberts. All songs traditional except "Shoals Of Herring" by Ewan McColl.
the 2nd half of the album was from a live recording with our FORMER band Maple Sugar.. recorded by Alex Sinclair, who later replaced Randy in the band. That side featured as well as the Three of us, Gilles Losier on piano and bass and Dawson Girdwood on fiddle.
